Hey folks

Here's some GPS tracks from Doi Suthep/ Doi Pui in Chiang Mai. It's a basic over view of the options. I havnt ridden the whole mountain yet - so this isn't complete. I'm relativity new at the GPS thing and I use a MAC so the trails are unedited. My files include multiple trails - so if you open or load any one of them, you will probably get duplicates. (everytime I export a trail it saves all the trails, so the first trail I ever saved was also included in ever other one I saved)  Plus there's a bunch of useless stuff that I saved by accident. Damn -  Now I'm confused.

Attached will be GPX (for your GPS if you have one) and KML for Google Earth. The best way to understand whats what - is by un-checking or deleting anything that I dont describe below. Like I said there's little things, tracks, and so on that are not trails, just roads and me screwing around. If anyone has software to clean this stuff up, please do. As soon as there's a program for MAC thats worth a s**t I'll buy it.

Well I'll do my best to describe everything. I'm not including all the GPX waypoints because every single waypoint (from Mae Sai to Phuket) is in my waypoint file. You can look over the LAT/LONG in the Google Earth and mark them on your GPS. The most important thing in riding around here - is finding your way out. So many trails are deadends, you can find yourself riding downhill heading straight for town, but be stopped by only a hundred meters of trees. Trees and prickers and growth you CANT get past. I've only seen one sign up there - nothing else is marked. GPS is the way to go.

To get to the top:
Ride up the road (or taxi 350baht) to San Ku Ruins.
Huay Kaew Rd to the Zoo, Up the Mountain (17.5 KM total) go past the temple, past The Royal Palace, At the turn for Ban Meow TURN RIGHT, Up to Doi Pui and San Ku Ruins. The road continues on, but is mostly downhill from here to the Ranger Gate.

Alliteratively you can ride up from Huai Dting Taow (Lake) via the Cake Walk Trail to connect with the other trails. I have a waypoint "car park" that you would ride to or park your car at. Then ride "counterclockwise" around the lake.

"Cake walk "
Aprox, Distance 13.5 Km (easy if you're just going downhill. The ride up is intermediate) Last I rode it it was paved from the Ranger Post all the way to almost the Coffee Stand /Plantation. I'm not sure about the the way up from the Lake.  I'm sure sooner or later the whole thing will be paved. It's a good marker trail though, as none of the Thailand GPS maps have the road mapped.

Waypoints for CakeWalk
1) San Ku Ruins & Ranger Post - The starting point - downhill from here
2) Coffee Plant - Coffee stall, 30baht a cup.
3)Ban Chankean Turn - Stay LEFT for easy way down, Right will take you to the other trails (expert)
4) "ForksiteB" Stay RIGHT to Chiang Mai- left will take you to Site B -CMU Agricultural camp and on to Samong/Mae Rim.
5)FORKleftrightOK - Up to you, going either way will lead you back to the same place.
6) Join - trails join back up , see above
7) Gate - Ranger Hut
8. Dirt><pavement - end of dirt
9) Car Park - Entrance to Huai Dting Taow from Canal Rd

"Sweet 16"(Xsweet in GPX format)
Distance 16.1 km (Expert to Intermediate) The hard sections are spread out. Many semi smooth fast parts in between the gnarly parts .
No waypoints: Get a GPS and load the file. Many options - many dead ends. To Many turns to describe.
Start from Ranger Post
Make RIGHT into Ban Chankean
Through village, around school/ football field.
One Waypoint I made in GEarth - "RiceField(deadend)", Its a fun ride down and back. Watch out for snakes in the rice field.
If you follow my path you'll come out about half way between Huay Kaew Rd and Huai Dting Taow. there's a restaurant "Baan Coffee" as you approach Canal Rd. Good Steaks!!

"11:11" ("it" in GPX format)
Distance 13.6  (Expert, downhill only, unless you like walking with your bike)
Start from Ranger Post
Make RIGHT into Ban Chankean
Through village, around school/ football field.
Make LEFT at first small single track / crosses over "11:11" trail.
Many options - many dead ends -use GPS
You end up on Huay Kaew Rd, 1.5 km uphill from the shrine and the base of the mountain

"shortie"
Distance 1.9km (hence the name)
(expert) Roots, rocks, drops = fun
Ride up Huay Kaew Rd past the Zoo, Up the Mountain to the first OVERLOOK/REST AREA. About 6km* Uphill
Follow the foot path (on your bike)
Jump down the steps X 3
You end up at CMU on Suthep Rd.

I like to get a lift up the mountain Kiss , do "11:11" then ride from the end of that -  up a  few Km and do "shortie".

If you're visiting and dont have a bike and want to go it alone  Shocked JACKY BIKE SHOP on Chang Puak Rd (North of Chang Puak Gate) rents full suspension bikes, down hill and all mountain.

TOP GEAR BIKES on Chiang Moi Rd ( in between Walarot Market and the Moat) Has Gamin GPS units for sale. Better to go on the weekend for GPS related stuff when "Tom" is in.

"Mountain Biking Chiang Mai" does tours of northern thailand including Doi Suthep/Pui, European/American owned. Service is great, rides are fun, pick up from hotel as well as lunch. The bikes are beaters though. 1500 baht for the day. Well worth it if you're just visiting and dont have gear. Book at any tour agent in town. http://mountainbikingchiangmai.com/
